FAQ
Trails Underfoot is a community powered website to provide information about path conditions and hazards prior to beginning an activity. If a condition report or hazard is added it will be displayed on the map along with the picture and any further information provided.
Users select an image showing the condition or hazard and upload it to Trails Underfoot. The location, date and time period are taken from the image and used in the post. Users can then add additional comments to provide further information relating to the condition or hazard.
When viewing the post detail there are three voting options; Cleared, Still Present and Report. Cleared can be used to indicate that the condition or hazard is no longer present, for example the fallen tree blocking the path has now been removed. Still Present indicates that the condition is hazard is ongoing for example the path is still waterlogged and muddy. Finally the Report process is used if the image is inappropriate or not relevant.
If a condition or hazard is reported by a user the thumbnail image displayed on the map will be blurred for all users. Registered users can still view the condition details and the image will be displayed unblurred. If an entry if reported three times the entry will be removed from the map and will not be visible to any user.
To help keep condition reports up to date entries will be removed after 10 days of being posted or 10 days after the last user states that condition or hazard is still present. Entries will also be removed if a set number of users indicate that the condition or hazard has now been cleared.
Currently there are no subscription costs to register and use Trails Underfoot. If you would like to contribute to towards some of the costs of running the website however you can donate via PayPal or become a Patreon supporter.
Registered users of Trails Underfoot are only required to provide a username and email address in order to create an account. Once an account is created all entries submitted by a user are stored by a unique user id number and the entries do not display this information. Voting is anonymous and images are stripped of any meta data and renamed upon upload. Submitted entries are also grouped into a time period of morning, daytime or evening so as not to provide a specific time when the image was taken.
